Prepare to Bloom on the NIIC Exam!
Ready for the new NAD-RID National
Interpreter Certification exam? You will not only be ready after this workshop,
you will BLOOM! Participants will learn the basics of the new exam, structure,
expectations, etc. and will also learn how to apply Bloom’s Taxonomy of
intellectual learning levels to prepare for and respond to ethical scenarios, dilemmas,
and decisions made on the interview exam scenarios.
This workshop can be presented in varying
lengths (from a few hours to a few days) and formats (presentation, study
groups, or one-on-one). It can also be designed for individuals preparing for
the exam, or educators facilitating exam preparation for their students.
Embedding Ethics into Curriculum
This workshop will facilitate the
exploration of ethics in interpreter education and how interpreter educators
are responding to the needs of students for theoretical foundations and
preparation for professional practice.
Opportunities for practice will support
development of curriculum that emphasizes experiential learning within
traditional preparation approaches for the purpose of preparing learners to
become ethical practitioners. Ethics will be addressed from structural,
sequential, and program-wise perspectives.
Start Your Interpreting Career Out on the
Right (and Left) Foot!
Our brains are wired to divide important
tasks between the right and left side of the brain. To be an effective
interpreter, we must master tasks associated with both: the language and logic
associated with the left and the space and visual-language comprehension
associated with the right.
This hands-on workshop will touch on the
theoretical basics and provide stimulating activities for both the right and
left sides of the brain, as well as resources for continued developmental reflection
for ASL/English interpreters. (Can also be modified and taught for ITP/ASL
Educators)
Navigating the Competency Maze
It isn’t easy to
understand how competencies are related to standards, how standards are related
to outcomes, how outcomes are related to skills, and how skills are related to
tasks. This complex maze makes it difficult for learners and educators to know
what skill should be taught and demonstrated for effective practice.
This workshop can be altered for
different groups, and presented from different perspectives:

and macro view of complex maze of definitions for interpreting skills.
Tipping Cows and Burning Down Silos:
Being Bold and Collaborative ASL/English Interpreters
Learning from our past, challenging
ineffective traditions, and making meaningful change can be difficult for
anyone, especially when we go it alone. This workshop will provide strategies for overcoming the isolation in the field of ASL/English Interpreting for
the purpose of finding a path that leads to a brave new world through
collaborative, creative and responsive practice.
